The Supreme Court on Thursday (February 26, 2026) asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other probe agencies to share copies of charge sheets filed in the 2023 Manipur ethnic violence cases to victims and their families.

A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant issued the directions after perusing the 12th status report submitted by former Maharashtra Director General of Police Dattatray Padsalgikar.

According to the report, the CBI has filed charge sheets in 20 cases before the special court, while investigation in six other FIRs was under way and expected to be completed within six months.

The Bench directed the CBI to complete investigation in the remaining cases within the stipulated time and file charge sheets.

In the previous hearing, the court had asked the CBI to file a status report detailing whether the agency had compiled sufficient evidence to “bring home the guilt” to persons accused of various heinous offences, including the sexual assault and gangrape of women during the sectarian violence that rocked the Northeastern State.
