Gunshots were allegedly fired outside a hostel at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi police officials said on Sunday (February 22, 2026). No one was injured in the incident.

Roshan Mishra, a third-year Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) student, claimed that three persons arrived on a motorcycle and suddenly opened fire in the air when he was standing outside the hostel on Saturday (February 21, 2026) night.

Following the incident, students recovered empty shell casings from the spot and handed them over to the police.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Vaibhav Banker said that Bhelpur ACP received information regarding the firing at BHU around 9:30 p.m.

“We have registered a case against three individuals allegedly involved in the incident and efforts are underway to catch them,” said Varanasi police in a statement. Police teams from several stations, along with the outpost in-charge of BHU, rushed to the spot immediately.

After the incident, dozens of students created an uproar questioning the security situation inside the campus of BHU, alleging such repeated incidents.
