The fifth foundation day and anniversary celebrations of Digital University Kerala (DUK) got underway on its campus on Friday.

DUK Vice-Chancellor Saji Gopinath, who addressed a press conference, said the university has developed a comprehensive educational model that integrates education, research and product development. With specialised programmes in emerging domains such as ’bio-AI’, ’computational science’ and ’computational drug design’, DUK emphasises problem-solving skills and hands-on industry experience.

A notable feature of the institution is its enterprise software development initiatives aligned with CMM Level 3 standards. Operating with an annual budget of approximately ₹100 crore, the university is moving toward a financially sustainable model in which 70-80% of its revenue is generated through projects, Dr. Gopinath pointed out.

Besides, through DUK’s innovative ‘Earn while you Learn’ MSc programmes, students have the opportunity to earn between ₹10,000 and ₹40,000 per month while pursuing their studies. The university has also secured 27 patents and is actively engaged in several national and international research projects.

The foundation day lecture was delivered by Swami Manohar, Principal Research Scientist, Microsoft. A special panel discussion featuring leading women professionals examined gender perspectives in AI and technology.

On digital transformation in governance, Rajan N. Khobragade, Additional Chief Secretary (Health), will speak on Kerala’s administrative digital initiatives on Saturday. IT Secretary Sreeram Sambasiva Rao and Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited managing director Santhosh Babu will also speak.

Industry leaders including Praveen Sasidharan, chief insurance officer, Allianz Services; A. Sreekumar, Head, Tata Elxsi; and Shilpa Menon, regional head of UST, will address students on how companies are adapting to rapid technological transformations.
