The late Dr. Mary Glowrey, who served for 36 years at St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Guntur, has been declared ‘Venerable’, the second stage in the process of sainthood according to the Roman Catholic Church.

St. Joseph’s General Hospital Director Sr. Gladys Inviolata via a press release on Tuesday said that the recognition was a matter of pride for Guntur. Born in Victoria, Australia, in 1887, Dr. Glowrey arrived in Guntur in 1920 as the first nun-doctor-missionary of JMJ Congregation in India.

She founded the Catholic Health Association of India in 1943 and served patients in Guntur until her death in 1957.
