Women’s day: panel announces awards

The Kerala Women’s Commission’s International Women’s Day celebrations will be held at Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan here on Wednesday.

Minister for Women and Child Development Veena George will inaugurate the celebrations at 11 a.m. and present the commission’s Sthree Shakthi awards and the awards for the best ‘Jagratha Samithis’ (vigilant committees).

The Sthreeshakthi awards comprise a purse of ₹10,000 and a citation.

The award winners include Thanya Nathan C, the first visually challenged woman judge in the State; Suni Lee, a master trainer in coconut climbing; E. Swaliha, winner of many medals in kayaking; Sainaba A.P., a powerlifter; Seena Sara Majnu, mountaineer and trekker; and Roshni G.S., a snake catcher and a Forest department employee.

The awards for the best Jagratha Samithis have gone to the Kasaragod district panchayat, Mattannur municipality and Maranallur grama panchayat.

The award includes a cash prize of ₹50,000, plaque, and citation.

Commission chairperson P. Satheedevi will preside over the function, to be attended by Shashi Tharoor, MP, and V.K. Prasanth, MLA, Mayor V.V. Rajesh; and Thiruvananthapuram district panchayat president V. Priyadarshini.

‘Sujathayude Swapnangal , Suharayudeyum,’ a solo play by actor Usha Chandrababu, will be presented on the occasion.
