The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 25 fishermen from two mechanised boats for allegedly fishing in the island nation’s waters late Friday (February 13, 2026). They have been detained at the Kankesanthurai naval base for questioning. A majority of them hailed from the Karaikal region.

According to sources, one of the boats had 14 fishermen on board, including one from Mayiladuthurai district and five from Nagapattinam district. The second boat had 11 fishermen, which included two from Mayiladuthurai and seven from Nagapattinam.

The fishermen had ventured into the sea from the Karaikal fishing harbour on February 11 and were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy late on Friday for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line.
