The State Cabinet on Friday approved the Kerala Graphene Policy, aimed at promoting a graphene ecosystem in the State. The State government has formulated major projects to utilise graphene technology, which has the potential to bring about revolutionary changes in various industrial sectors.

Touted as the wonder material of the future, graphene and its derivatives have a wide range of applications spanning electronics, composites, energy storage, water filtering, sensors, packaging and so on. Scientifically known to be a crucial additive in improving the mechanical, electrical or other physical properties of composite materials, the carbon form is expected to find emphasis in Kerala through a wide range of traditional and emerging industries in addition to textiles, rubber, construction and building materials.

Initiatives

The Kerala Graphene Policy aims to promote research and application of graphene and related materials in the State and ensure support for development and industry. This includes creating sustainable activities, establishing a favourable start-up ecosystem, supporting research and development, ensuring technical support and global partnerships, financial consultancy services and marketing. The government initiatives include the setting up of a Graphene Innovation Centre and the Graphene Production Park, which provide infrastructure and support for start-ups and industry players.
