NCP(SP) leader Sharad Pawar was on Monday (February 9, 2026) admitted to a private hospital in Pune after he went through a bout of coughing and breathing difficulties, his family said.

The veteran politician was moved from Baramati to Pune in his private vehicle and has been admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune. A decision on whether he would be moved to Mumbai for further treatment will be taken after his medical tests are conducted, the family members said.

‘Medical reports awaited’

Meanwhile, doctors have said that his condition is stable, and that he has been admitted to a private room, and not the intensive care unit (ICU). “This is due to physical exertion. He has chest congestion. His treatment is going on. His condition is stable. Tests are being run. Once the test results are out, we will determine the future course of action about the treatment,” Dr. Abhijit Lodha of Ruby Hall Clinic told reporters.

The octogenarian political leader was accompanied by his family members including Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule, son-in-law Sadanand Sule. Grand-nephew Rohit Pawar reached the Pune hospital soon after Mr. Pawar was wheeled in to the premises.

Sharad Pawar’s nephew and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died in a tragic air crash on January 28. The senior leader was seen meeting several people and attending condolence meetings thereafter.

Reacting to the reports, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that stress must have caused the illness. “Our prayers and best wishes are there for his speedy recovery. I am sure, he will recover well, quite soon,” he said in Mumbai.

‘Nothing to worry’

“There is nothing to fear or worry. I appeal to the party workers not to make a beeline to the hospital here. What has happened to him is due to physical stress. The family believes that the hospital protocol should be followed. Nobody will be allowed to meet him,” Mr. Rohit said.

The MLA added that the leader was not put on any support. “After his reports come, we will decide if he has to be kept here or moved to Mumbai,” he said.

Sources added that Mr. Pawar complained of coughing bout and breathing difficulties, after which it was decided to immediately move him from Baramati to Pune on Monday afternoon.
