Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association here on Wednesday staged a dharna raising several demands, including a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Some of the key demands of the protesters, included fixing crop prices based on the Swaminathan Committee recommendation and enactment of a central law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP).
S. P. Elangovan, one of the organisers, said, loans obtained by the farmers from nationalised banks should be waived fully. “When the Union government can waive crore of loans obtained by corporates, why cannot they do it for us,” he questioned.
“Withdraw the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, which threatens free electricity for farmers and huts, 100 free units for houses, and subsidised power for small businesses,” he added.
He demanded for the repeal of Seed Act 2025 which allows corporate companies to monopolise seed production and would aid in destroying Indian agriculture.
The government should implement crop insurance schemes directly rather than allowing corporate companies to profit from disaster compensation, the protesters demanded.
The protesters also condemned the replacement of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act with the new scheme, acquisition of agricultural land for industrial growth, among others.
Their demand also included resuming operations of the National Cooperative Sugar Mill at Alanganallur.
