The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of reports regarding the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl during the recent Sammakka Saralamma Jatara at Medaram in Mulugu district.

In a release issued on Wednesday, the Commission said that it had taken note of all the media and social media reports alleging that the incident involved a case of gang rape purportedly committed by five youths from Chhattisgarh.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has constituted an inquiry committee to examine the matter. The committee will be chaired by Delina Khongdup, Member of the Commission. Kanchan Khattar, Senior Coordinator at the NCW, will serve as a member. An advocate nominated by the District Legal Services Authority may also assist the committee.

The inquiry proceedings are scheduled to commence on February 5. The committee has been tasked with examining the circumstances leading to the alleged incident, assessing the action taken by the authorities concerned, interacting with relevant officials and persons to ascertain facts, and recommending remedial measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents. Its findings and recommendations will be submitted to the Commission for appropriate action, the release said.
