The Idukki district was placed on high alert on Tuesday after several key locations received bomb threats via email. The targeted sites included the Mullaperiyar dam, Idukki dam, the District Court at Muttom in Thodupuzha, and the District Collectorate.

According to the police, the emails were received on Tuesday morning, prompting authorities to declare a high-alert status and launch extensive search operations. A five-member team led by bomb squad district charge officer P. Manoj Kumar carried out the searches with assistance from the dog squad. Magi and Dolly, dogs specially trained in explosives detection, were deployed as part of the operation.

Officials noted that the Mullaperiyar and Idukki dams are classified as highly sensitive and critical installations, warranting enhanced security measures.

District Police Chief K.M. Sabu Mathew said that searches were conducted at all four locations mentioned in the emails, but no suspicious objects or materials were found.

“The email is suspected to have originated in Tamil Nadu and contained several false narratives. The police remain on high alert as investigations and precautionary searches continue,” Mr. Mathew said.

This is not the first such incident in the district this year. On January 8, court proceedings at the Idukki District Court were disrupted after a similar threat was sent to the District Judge’s official email address in the name of a ‘Tamil Liberation’ organisation.

“The district has been receiving several such email threats in recent times,” Mr. Mathew added.
