Belagavi city police plan to introduce a new type of beat system to prevent house-break theft and other crimes.

The ‘Locked House Beat System’ will be implemented by the local police officers in cooperation with residents. It involves focussing on locked houses, and keeping an eye on them.

Police Commissioner Borase Bhushan Gulabrao has urged residents who are planning to go on vacation to intimate the jurisdictional police station. They should share details, like their name and address, Google location pin, and the period for which they are likely to stay away.

Officers will keep the information strictly confidential. It will be shared only with individual constables and officers assigned beat duty in the area.

As per police records, house-break thefts tend to happen beyond midnight when most people are fast asleep and streets are deserted.

Beat staff will be asked to visit each locked house twice every night between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., go around the house, and ensure that there is no attempt at theft. The inspection will be discreet, without causing inconvenience to neighbours.

Mr. Borase told reporters that it was a participatory preventive activity, and not surveillance. It is strictly voluntary, and only those who want to participate will be involved. It will help build and sustain bonds between the jurisdictional staff and the local communities, and will help improve coordination and response time.

Those interested can seek police assistance by sending a message to 8277951146, or meet the officials concerned before locking their houses for long periods.
