Dalit Bahujan Resource Centre (DBRC) organised a livelihood support programme and extended assistance to 33 women engaged in the collection and sale of hair, in Vijayawada on Monday.
These women, belonging to Yerukula, Budaga Jangam and Mondibanda communities, sell aluminium utensils in return for human hair. They sell a kg of hair for ₹5,000.
As part of the programme, NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha interacted with the beneficiaries and distributed aluminium utensils to support their traditional livelihood activity. The support is aimed at strengthening their income, a press release from DBRC said.
The Collector appreciated DBRC for implementing the initiative and encouraged them to extend the programme to benefit a larger number of women in the district.
Addressing the gathering, DBRC deputy director Ch. Samuel Anil Kumar said the organisation has supported 620 waste and hair pickers with various livelihood interventions and expressed hope that the beneficiaries would effectively utilise the support to achieve increased income and better living conditions.
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Urban Community Development (UCD) Project Officer P. Venkat Narayana and other officials participated in the programme.
