The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday (January 31, 2026) demanded a Supreme Court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the Anandapur warehouse fire in West Bengal, accusing the Trinamool Congress government of not taking action against the “main culprits”.

At a press conference, BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan said that 27 people had lost their lives so far and that several others were still missing. “However, neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor any State Minister has visited the site. They are silent over the whole issue,” he alleged.

Mr. Paswan further alleged that the chief executive officer of Wow Momo had recently accompanied Ms. Banerjee on her visit to Madrid and questioned why the State government had not taken action against him. He said the arrest of the warehouse manager and deputy manager was a mere “token action”.

Describing the incident as a “man-made disaster”, he alleged that basic fire safety norms were not enforced. Mr. Paswan said the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, along with BJP workers, staged protests in Kolkata, condemning the Mamata Banerjee government for procedural lapses.

“If we look only at January 2026, incidents such as factory fires in West Bengal, the Anandapur factory inferno, the Digberia paint factory fire, the Burrabazar chemical fire, the Gangasagar camp fire, and the Nonadanga slum fire, had caused immense suffering to poor people… despite this, the West Bengal government appears to be completely indifferent,” he said.

“The situation in West Bengal is no longer hidden from anyone. As yet another example of misgovernance, the condition of bridge construction in the State has also come to light. Structures such as Majerhat Bridge, Vivekananda Flyover, Ultadanga Flyover, Manganj Canal Bridge, and Kakdwip Bridge are in an extremely poor and dangerous condition,” the BJP spokesperson added.
