Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday unveiled the foundation for the integrated development of a Multi-Modal Facility Complex (MMFC) with Kuralagam at Broadway in Chennai, which is to be undertaken at a total cost of ₹822.70 crore.

The MMFC would be spread over 26,240 sq.ft. and would have a built-up area of 1.36 lakh sq.ft. While one tower would have nine floors housing the MMFC, another would have 10 floors with Kuralagam, an official release said.

The complex, which would have para-transit facilities, will also have parking spaces for over 400 cars and over 1,100 two-wheelers. The State government announced the project during the demand for grants in the Assembly for 2022-23, and orders were issued for granting funds to the tune of ₹822.70 crore.

In another event, Mr. Stalin also inaugurated a wedding hall named after late leader B.R. Ambedkar, which was constructed at a cost of ₹21.50 crore by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. He also presided over the weddings of 10 couples.

Appealing to them to give their babies Tamil names, Mr. Stalin said: “I’m not criticising or belittling anyone. We see people giving names in English and in Northern languages. When I say this, ‘Stalin’ is not a Tamil name. However, there is a reason behind it,” Mr. Stalin said and recalled how his father, late leader and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi named him after Russian leader Joseph Stalin.

Listing out various steps by the State government, Mr. Stalin said that Chennai city could now manage any amount of rainfall due to various measures undertaken by his government. From Metrorail project to flood mitigation measures, Mr. Stalin pointed out the various efforts undertaken by his government in developing the city.

He said that the government has been implementing several steps to ensure necessary infrastructure and healthcare for the people. “Whenever the DMK comes to power, we have brought in several welfare projects for Tamil Nadu, especially Chennai,” the Chief Minister said.

“You all are aware how it was earlier when there were rain. You must understand how the situation has changed now. You are aware of the human-made flood in 2015. The people of Chennai would not forget easily to what extent they were affected,” Mr. Stalin said. He listed out the Mayor Chittibabu flyover, the Skywalk in T. Nagar, J. Anbazhagan flyover, Chengai Sivam flyover, among others as the government’s achievements.

Ministers K.N. Nehru and P.K. Sekarbabu; Chennai Mayor R. Priya; MLAs Thayagam Kavi, A. Vetriazhagan and Joseph Samuel and senior officials were also present.
