The imaginative ability of young designers peaked at the Lepakshi Handicrafts Design Competition and Masterpieces Exhibition in Vijayawada on Saturday (September 13, 2025), as 25 students from the National Institute of Design, Andhra Pradesh, (NID-A.P.) explored the world of rich traditional crafts.

Specialising in Textile, Industrial, and Communication Design, the students studied the exhibits with a sharp eye for detail, evaluating product design, finish, usability, and presentation. Many of them expressed admiration for the artisans’ skill while offering insights on how these products could be aligned with contemporary markets without losing their cultural essence.

The exercise is part of an ongoing collaboration between NID-AP and Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (APHDC), under the leadership of Lepakshi MD Vishwa Manoharan, aimed at infusing innovation into the State’s handicraft sector.

Students interacted closely with artisans and visitors, promising constructive suggestions on design improvements, modern packaging, and marketing strategies that could expand the global reach of Andhra Pradesh’s crafts. “This is not only a learning opportunity for us, but also a chance to give back to the community of artisans by sharing design perspectives that add value to their creations,” said a student during the visit.

The initiative highlights the government’s commitment to safeguarding traditional crafts while preparing them for global markets. NID-A.P. faculty member Swati Pandey Sinha accompanied the students’, guiding their interaction and analysis.
