Police have arrested four men for allegedly harassing a woman and assaulting her fiance under the influence of alcohol in southeast Bengaluru’s Madiwala recently.
The accused have been identified as Mohith, Vijaykumar, Tejaswi, and David, all aged between 25 and 35, police said. The incident occurred on January 19 around 1 a.m., when the couple were talking near Maruti Nagar in Madiwala.
According to the police, the accused had been partying at a house in Maruti Nagar, and two of them stepped out to buy cigarettes. While returning, they noticed the couple and allegedly passed a vulgar comment at the woman, prompting her to shout at them.
An investigator in the case told The Hindu that the couple followed the accused for about 800 to 900 metres, during which the woman’s fiance questioned them about their behaviour.
“The accused then called two of their friends from the house for backup and assaulted the woman’s fiance. Although she tried to intervene, the accused continued the assault and, in the melee, touched the woman inappropriately,” the investigator said.
Based on the complaint filed by the woman, the Madiwala police have registered an FIR under sections 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 115 (petty organised crime) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
