GUWAHATI:
The Centre has proposed a ₹213.24 crore ropeway project to link a major railway station to Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hill in Guwahati.
Thanking Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for the announcement tagged ‘Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi’ (Heritage with Development), Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the initiative would be a step toward giving “new momentum to sacred journeys”.
According to the blueprint, the 1.43-kilometre-long ropeway will connect Kamakhya Railway Station with the hilltop shrine, cutting travel time from at least 20 minutes to six minutes. The project has been designed to ferry 16,500 passengers across 18 modern gondolas, ensuring smoother and safer movement for devotees and tourists alike.
Conceived as an eco-friendly green mobility solution, the ropeway is expected to ease traffic congestion on the Nilachal Hill road and reduce environmental stress. Envisaged to improve pilgrim convenience, the project is expected to generate local employment opportunities and sustainably boost tourism in and around Guwahati.
