The Ernakulam District Court on Thursday received what was later proven to be a hoax bomb threat. The threat was reportedly e-mailed to the official email address of the court.

The threat message was that five bombs would be exploded at the court complex at 2.35 p.m. It said the explosion was planned as part of a protest demanding the implementation of the 1979 Nainar Das Police Union recommendations for police constables in Tamil Nadu. Similar threats were reportedly issued to different entities, including courts and airports, in the country recently.

Though bomb squads and K9 units inspected the crowded Ernakulam court complex soon after the police were alerted, nothing suspicious was found.

The Ernakulam central police on Thursday registered a case over the incident under Section 217 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (giving false information to public servants with intent to harm others) and Section 118(b) (knowingly spreads rumours or gives false alarm to mislead the police, fire brigade or any other essential service) and Section 120(o) (cause nuisance to others through any means of communication) of the Kerala Police Act, 2011.
