Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) Chairman N.A. Haris, on Saturday, said that he would hold discussions with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to explore the possibility of providing free autorickshaws to women and transgender persons who successfully complete training in auto-driving.

Mr. Haris, who is also MLA for Shantinagar constituency, was speaking at the launch of a “Free Auto-Driving Training Program for Transgender Persons and Women in Shantinagar constituency,” organised by B.PAC in collaboration with CGI at the Kala Kendra in MG Road Metro Station.

“It is important that women and transgender persons, once trained, are provided free autos by the government. This will enable them to begin their professional journey with dignity and achieve financial independence,” Mr. Haris said.

Highlighting the social impact of the initiative, Geetanjali Vikram Kirloskar, MD of Kirloskar Systems Pvt. Ltd., said the entry of women and transgender persons into the city’s autorickshaw fleet would not only empower them, but also encourage women commuters to travel more confidently at night. “It is commendable that women and transgender persons are coming forward to take up auto-driving. Their presence in public transport will encourage more women to travel confidently at night. Bengaluru should set a national example in inclusive mobility.”

Outlining the programme’s expansion, Revathy Ashok, managing trustee and CEO of B.PAC, said that the second phase would train over 100 participants. “Beyond driving, we will equip them with leadership, English communication, customer service, digital literacy, and financial skills,” she said.
