The Janata Dal (Secular) has urged the State Election Commission to use EVMs in the elections to five corporations in the Greater Bengaluru Authority region instead of returning to ballot paper.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, JD(S) general secretary Venkatrao Nadagouda said that the party has petitioned the State Election Commission to use EVMs, and has highlighted the advantages of EVMs and pitfalls of using the ballot paper. The misuse of EVMs in elections has not been proved yet and hence ballot paper should not be used, he said, adding that the BJP has also made a similar petition to the SEC.

He said that the party welcomed the statement of former Member of Parliament D.K. Suresh, who has also favoured the use of EVMs.

Stating that the BJP and JD(S) will be facing the GBA elections in an alliance, he said that there is no confusion about facing the elections together. Mr. Nadagouda said that the preparations in the party for GBA elections is under way, and that another round of preparatory meeting would be chaired by Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
