Works to set up the country’s largest single Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), with a capacity of 600/1200 megawatt (MW) in Nandyal district, have gained pace.

Nandyal district Collector Rajakumari Ganiya said the plant will be set up by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) in 38.4-acre land in Nandipadu village of Kolimigundla mandal in the district. Asserting that the construction of the plant will pave way for industrial development of the district, Ms. Rajakumari Ganiya thanked the Central and State governments for giving the necessary approvals.

Along with SECI Director Shiv Kumar and deputy managers Shubham Mishra and Rohith Chouhan, the Collector held a meeting with officials of the departments concerned on Tuesday. Ms. Rajakumari Ganiya said the SECI was planning to commence the works on the plant by December and the district administration would extend all possible support for the same.

The setting up of the green energy project will attract huge investments and bring in development into the district. “The GSDP of the district will also increase with the setting up of the plant. In other States also, the districts where green energy projects were set up are now marching towards development,” she said.

Speaking on the importance of the project, Mr. Shiv Kumar said the main objective of the project is to supply 1,200 MW of power to the main cities in the country during peak summers or in emergency situations. The project will help store power generated from renewable sources like solar and wind and supply the same to the grid when needed.

The SECI Director sought the cooperation of the district administration in changing the land for setting up 665 kV towers, 765 kN transmission lines and also additional government land for expansion of the project. He also sought a road network to reach the project site, to which the Collector responded positively.
