The Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case against two convicts for allegedly assaulting an assistant jailer during a routine inspection at the central prison following a trivial argument on January 7, 2026.
The accused convicts have been identified as Ananda and Abdul Ghani. Police registered an FIR after the Prison Department conducted an internal inquiry and subsequently lodged a formal complaint. The two have been booked under relevant sections for assaulting a government servant while discharging official duties, and further investigation is underway.
According to the complaint, S. Murthy, Assistant Jailer, was on duty when a group of inmates demanded permission to meet the Superintendent of Prison. When the request was denied, a heated argument broke out, which allegedly escalated into a physical assault. Investigators said Ananda and Abdul Ghani attacked the assistant jailer, prompting other prison staff to intervene and bring the situation under control.
In his report to senior authorities, Mr. Murthy flagged serious concerns over the lack of adequate security for prison staff, stating that officials were vulnerable to attacks by inmates during routine duties. He urged the authorities to take immediate security measures to prevent similar incidents from spiralling out of control.
The incident has once again brought into focus the irregularities within the prison system and the pressure faced by prison staff. Notably, a high-level committee on prison reforms, which recently submitted its report to the Home Minister, had also highlighted the urgent need to strengthen security for prison personnel.
Meanwhile, prison officials have intensified surprise inspections inside the jail. On Thursday (January 15, 2026), staff recovered three mobile phones from a dustbin near the washroom of Room No. 5, Tower 1, Barrack 4. Officials said that since late November, authorities have seized over 135 mobile phones, more than 100 SIM cards, and other prohibited items from within the prison premises.
