Organs harvested from a brain-dead road accident victim by a team of doctors at Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Tiruchi, helped save lives this week.

According to a hospital release, a 45-year-old woman of Kannivadi village in Dharapuram taluk of Tiruppur district was injured in a road accident on January 14. She was initially provided emergency treatment at Apollo Hospitals, Karur, and subsequently referred to the Tiruchi facility where she was admitted under the close supervision of a specialised medical team and received intensive care.

Despite the treatment, doctors, after thorough medical evaluation and critical observation, declared her brain dead. The bereaved family members consented to donate the woman’s organs.

Through a series of coordinated surgical procedures, vital organs such as heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs were retrieved. The liver and kidneys were transplanted in patients undergoing treatment at Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Tiruchi.

The remaining organs were allocated to patients on the waiting list in accordance with the guidelines of the Tamil Nadu Transplant Authority (TRANSTAN), said the release.

The mortal remains of the organ donor were laid to rest with full honours. The final rites were conducted in the presence of officials representing the District Collector of Tiruppur, including the Dharapuram Revenue Divisional Officer and Tahsildar Officer, along with Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Tiruchi Unit head and associate vice-president V. Jayaraman and senior police officials.
