Superintendent of Police Tushar Dudi has warned of tough action against organisers of rooster fights and ‘jallikattu’ in the district.

Extending Sankranti wishes to the people of the district and also police personnel here on Tuesday (January 13), Mr. Tushar Dudi said the festivities should reflect the Telugu culture and traditions and fill every house with bountiful happiness and prosperity. On the occasion, he said it is against the law to organise or participate in rooster fights or jallikattu. “Rooster fights and jallikattu involves cruelty towards animals and police should not allow such things to take place in the district,” the SP said.

He also appealed to the youth not to participate in rooster fights, gambling or ‘gundata’ (a dice game) as cases will be registered against those who indulge in such activities. “Youth will find difficult in getting jobs and even passports if criminal cases are registered them,” he said.

Mr. Tushar Dudi said they have kept a tight vigil on old offenders and any violation will be dealt seriously including arrests. The SP asked officials of revenue, animal welfare department, and others to work in coordination to stop rooster fights. He wanted tahsildar, local sub-inspector of police and animal welfare department officials to form special teams at the mandal level and keep a vigil in the villages to stop rooster fights and jallikattu.

The SP wanted the circle inspectors and sub-inspectors to hold meetings with the village elders and sarpanches in the villages to stop rooster fights. “Set up pickets and take effective steps to stop rooster fights and jallikattu,” he said. The SP also warned of registering cases under Sections of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and AP Gaming Act against those who give their open land or fields for organisers of rooster fights or gambling.
