Eight persons died and around 25 people were injured when a goods vehicle ploughed into a crowd participating in a Ganesha procession at Mosale Hosahalli on Hassan-Holenarasipur Road late on Friday (September 12, 2025) evening.

The police shifted the injured to hospitals in Hassan by ambulances. Eight were declared brought dead. Of the injured, 18 are under treatment at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and seven people at private hospitals, according to a communication from Krishna Byre Gowda, Revenue Minister, who is also in charge of Hassan district, at 11.30 p.m.

The toll is expected to rise, as several people were seriously injured in the incident. Among the dead and injured, a majority were youths. A student of the Government Engineering College at Mosale Hosahalli was among those killed.

Vehicle lost control

Many people of Mosale Hosahalli and neighbouring villages were dancing to popular tunes being played as part of the procession when the goods vehicle suddenly ploughed into the crowd. The crowd did not expect the vehicle to come their way.

The movement of vehicles was restricted to one lane and the procession was on the other. The goods vehicle, as seen in the video clip of the incident, took a sudden turn and ploughed into the crowd.

It is said that the goods vehicle first hit a two-wheeler and later the driver lost control over it. The police took Bhuvanesh, the driver, into custody.

Local people called up ambulance services and shifted the injured people to hospitals in Hassan. As news about the accident spread, many people from neighbouring villages rushed to the spot. Family members and relatives of the deceased were inconsolable.

CM announces compensation

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the families of those who died in the accident and stated that the government would bear the cost of the treatment of the injured.

Mr. Siddaramaiah posted on X, stating that he was pained to learn about the incident and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Holenarasipur MLA and former Minister, H.D. Revanna, his son and MLC, Suraj Revanna, reached the spot.

In Hassan, Swaroop Prakash, MLA, Shreyas Patel, MP, visited the hospital and enquired about the condition of the injured.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy has expressed shock over the accident.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the death of people in the incident had left him deeply shocked.

“This is an unfortunate incident. May God grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the grieving families to bear the loss,” he said. He also urged the State government to ensure that the injured get free treatment.
