K. Karthick, who recently assumed charge as the District Police Chief of Thiruvananthapuram city, has pledged strict enforcement measures to combat drug abuse and criminal activities. He also emphasised the need for strong public support to effectively curb the growing menace.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the Deputy Inspector General of Police pointed to the worrying rise in substance use across India, and termed drug abuse as a serious social evil threatening the future of the country. He said drug mafias were increasingly targeting the younger generation and warned that stringent action would be taken against those behind the trade.

Mr. Karthick said police investigations would not be limited to drug consumers, who are often victims, but would be expanded to include those involved in the manufacturing and smuggling of narcotic substances. He added that properties acquired using proceeds from the drug trade would be confiscated. Special focus will be made on dismantling the financial networks supporting such activities, he said.

He added that habitual offenders involved in criminal cases would be kept under close surveillance within the limits of each police station. The investigations in such cases would be expedited and charge-sheets filed without delay. Preventive detention would also be invoked in relevant cases to maintain law and order in the region, he added.

Violence against women and children

The police officer also identified violence against women and children, including eve-teasing, as a major area of concern. Creating an atmosphere in which people can live peacefully was the top priority of the city police.

Traffic-related issues would also receive priority attention, with measures include strengthening the traffic regulatory committee and consulting various sections of society, including people’s representatives and officials from different departments, to address problems affecting the daily lives of residents, receiving importance.

Responding to concerns over the increasing instances of suicides among police personnel, Mr. Karthick said steps would be taken to ensure a better balance between professional responsibilities and family life. Efforts would also be made to organise family gatherings for police personnel.
