Officials rushed to the Hippargi barrage on the Krishna river in Bagalkot district after reports came stating that one of the gates on the reservoir was partially damaged leading to large scale leakage of water.

Engineers found that a plate on the 22nd gate of the dam was damaged, probably due to the pressure of impounded water. The dam now has around 6 tmcft of water.

A lot of water is leaking from the dam. Around 0.72 tmcft of water is estimated to have leaked, though the exact quantum is yet to be calculated.

District in-charge Minister R.B. Thimmapur visited the dam site and sought information from engineers.

Mr. Thimmapur instructed Deputy Commissioner Sangappa and engineers to consult experts and ensure that the damage is repaired properly.

The Minister later told reporters that the State government will start work on the repairs immediately. He said that there is no report of crop damage due to the leakage.

Assistant Commissioner Shweta Bedikar, Tahsildars and engineers were present.
