Security along certain stretches of the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura was heightened after reports of the movement of the members of two Bangladesh-based armed groups, officials said on Saturday (January 3, 2026).
These groups are the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF).
Rinku Lather, District Magistrate of southern Tripura’s Gomati district, issued a notification stating the possibility of PCJSS and UPDF members crossing over into the State along with other Bangladesh nationals and Rohingyas to “commit crimes, indulge in smuggling, and disturb public order”. The apprehension, the notification said, was based on inputs received from the Border Security Force.
It further said that restrictions under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 have been imposed to ensure peace and tranquillity by preventing the designs of anti-national elements and activities of organisations inimical to the safety and security of the general public.
“The night curfew will be effective from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. till February 28 in certain border areas under the Karbook Sub-Division of Gomati district,” the notification read.
People residing within 300 metres of the international border have been excluded from the restrictions.
Tripura shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh. The State’s Gomati and Dhalai districts share borders with the trouble-torn Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh.
On June 13, 2024, the Tripura Police detained 13 members of the PCJSS. They included two women.
Officials said these 13 crossed over to India for medical treatment after being injured in clashes with members of a rival group at Panchari in the CHT. Most of them had bandages on their legs and hands.
