A 35-year-old laboratory technician was held on Saturday for the death of a welder after the former reportedly gave the latter an injection, in Pudukkottai village, near Tirupattur town.

Police said that the arrested man was identified as K. Parthiban, a native of Sivaji Pettai village near Tirupattur town. He has completed a diploma course as lab technician. After he was dismissed from work as a contract staffer at the Government Taluk Hospital in Tirupattur town a few years ago, Parthiban started treating patients at home.

Initial inquiry revealed that Parthiban was offering medical treatment to patients in the village for many years without professional qualification. He travels in his two-wheeler to evade health officials and police surveillance.

Police said that the deceased wielder S. Sakthivel, 34, a native of Pudupettai village, befriended Parthiban a few months ago. Sakthivel was working in a metal workshop in the village where he got injured a few days ago. Subsequently, he was suffering from high fever.

Police said Sakthivel’s family called the quack Parthiban home to treat him. Reportedly, Sakthivel collapsed as soon as Parthiban administered the injection.

Immediately, Sakthivel was rushed to Government Taluk Hospital where doctors said that he was brought dead. Based on an alert from hospital authorities, police rushed to the spot. A case was registered. Special teams were formed to nab Parthiban. A case was registered by Tirupattur Taluk police. A probe is under way.
