Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar on Friday said that community leaders should refrain from making communal statements, warning that such rhetoric could endanger Kerala’s social fabric.

He was speaking at a reception accorded to the Kerala Yatra launched under the leadership of the Kerala Muslim Jamaat at the Collectorate ground here.

Kerala’s people believe in democracy and fraternity, he said, adding that any attempt to divide people by undermining religious harmony must be rejected. Such moves are unacceptable in a democratic society, he said, stressing the need for caution in words and actions, especially by those holding positions of influence and respect.

“A single careless expression should not create cracks in society. True human evolution comes through both material and spiritual growth,” he said.

The Kerala Yatra reached Kannur on its second day and was received at Payyannur by district Sunni leaders.

As part of the yatra, receptions will be held on January 3 at Nadapuram; January 4 at Kozhikode Muthalakkulam; January 5 at Kalpetta; January 6 at Gudalur; January 7 at Areekode; January 8 at Tirur; January 9 at Ottappalam; January 10 at Chavakkad; January 11 at Ernakulam Marine Drive; January 12 at Thodupuzha; January 13 at Kottayam; January 14 at Pathanamthitta (10 a.m.) and Kayamkulam (5 p.m.); and January 15 at Kollam. The yatra will conclude at Putharikandam Maidan in Thiruvananthapuram at 5 p.m. on January 16.
