Telangana featured prominently across several parameters of India’s intellectual property ecosystem during 2024-25, according to the annual report 2024-25 released by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trade Marks and Geographical Indications (CGPDTM). The State’s presence extended beyond patent filings to include design applications, national IP awareness programmes, examiner training and capacity-building initiatives.

In patent filings by Indian applicants, Telangana recorded 4,293 applications during 2024-25, placing it fifth nationally. The State showed a clear year-on-year increase compared to 2023-24, when 2,795 applications were filed. Telangana was among the States specifically identified by the CGPDTM as having contributed significantly to the rise in domestic patent filings, alongside Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

A closer break-up shows that Telangana accounted for 4,288 ordinary patent applications, one convention application, and four national phase applications in 2024-25 said Subhajit Saha, a GI practitioner.

Telangana also registered a visible footprint in design filings. During 2024-25, the State accounted for 979 design applications filed. In terms of design registrations, Telangana recorded 637 registered designs, placing it among the contributing States in the national total of 27,299 registered designs during the year.

The participant profile from Telangana included three school attendees, 3,207 college students, 1,023 participants from institutes, and 308 university-level participants. Gender-wise data showed 2,883 female and 1,658 male participants from the State, indicating a higher participation of women in IP awareness initiatives.

As part of a major recruitment drive, 407 newly appointed Examiners of Patents and Designs joined induction training programmes conducted at RGNIIPM-Nagpur, and Dr MCR HRD Institute in Hyderabad, in January 2025, the report said.

In terms of IP awareness and outreach, Telangana saw extensive activity under the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM). During 2024-25, as many as 22 NIPAM programmes were conducted in the State. Through these programmes, a total of 4,541 participants from Telangana were sensitised to intellectual property rights.
