Two persons were stabbed to death by a group of people at Jai Bhim Nagara in Bhadravathi on Friday evening. The deceased have been identified as Kiran, 25 and Manjunath, 65.
The incident occurred, according to the police, in connection with a love affair.
Nandish, a resident of Bhadravathi, had allegedly eloped with Shrushthi two days ago. They returned to town on Friday, and in the presence of the police, the girl reportedly said she would stay with her friend, leaving her parents and relatives disappointed. The boy and the girl belonged to the same caste, and both are majors.
Later, a group of people, including the girl’s family members, attacked Kiran accuding him of supporting the couple. Even as Kiran was being attacked, Manjunath, a senior citizen, intervened to stop the attackers. But he also suffered serious injuries and died.
Shivamogga SP G.K. Mithun Kumar informed the media that the Bhadravathi Old Town Police took five people into custody in connection with the murder.
