The Tamil Nadu BJP on Tuesday (December 9, 2025) strongly condemned the Opposition MPs for submitting a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to move an impeachment motion in Parliament against Justice G.R. Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

Justice Swaminathan had directed the authorities of the Subramaniya Swamy Temple at the Thirupparankundram hill, Madurai, to light of a lamp at the deepathoon (pillar) located near a dargah atop the hill.

In a statement, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran alleged: “Moving an impeachment motion against Justice Swaminathan, whose judgment upheld the cultural rights of Tamils, was utterly shameful. The move by MPs of the INDIA bloc was aimed at intimidating the judiciary. The DMK-Congress alliance would be defeated by the people.”

Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy claimed the DMK and its allies had “resorted to intimidation and threats” instead of implementing the court’s orders. They had no moral right to move an impeachment motion against the judge.

Mr. Thirupathy said the State government had arrested some individuals for allegedly making derogatory remarks against a Madras High Court judge during the hearing of a case related to the stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) Karur rally. Similarly. The government should also have taken action against Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan and Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary P. Shanmugam for “making derogatory remarks” against the judge in the Thirupparankundram case.

“The entire episode surrounding the Thirupparankundram issue had been orchestrated by the so-called ‘Dravidian model’ government. It is nothing but DMK’s minority appeasement politics. The DMK is pursuing its anti-Sanatan agenda,” he claimed.
