Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate a three-day mega agricultural exhibition at the playground of Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Tiruvannamalai on December 26, attracting at least one lakh farmers in the erstwhile North Arcot region of northern Tamil Nadu.
As part of preparations for Mr. Stalin’s visit to the temple town, along with Collector K. Tharpagaraj, Tiruvannamalai Corporation officials and police, V. Dakshinamoorthy, Agricultural Production Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare inspected the school playground where the farm exhibition will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister.
“The civic body will handle basic amenities like water supply and garbage collection during the farm expo. During the visit, Mr. Stalin is also expected to inaugurate completed projects of the Corporation,” S. Selva Balaji, Commissioner, Tiruvannamalai Corporation, told The Hindu.
Officials of the Department of Agriculture said that the farm expo is aimed to display the advantages of farm technology, seeds, equipment, government subsidies, and schemes for farmers. Special sessions by experts in the farm sector will also be held to provide insights on advanced farming activities. Tribals from Jawadhu Hills will be invited to share ideas on the best farming methods in hilly and rocky terrains.
Revenue officials said that Mr. Stalin will visit the town on December 25-26 where he will chair a meeting with party functionaries in the region on December 25. He will also unveil the statue of former Chief Minister and DMK president (late) M. Karunanidhi at Kilpennathur town near Tiruvannamalai.
The Chief Minister will inaugurate several completed projects by the civic body and other government departments in the region on December 26, the following day. He will also hand over government financial assistance to beneficiaries on the occasion. “We have instructed officials of various departments to list completed projects that could be inaugurated during his (Mr. Stalin) visit to the town. A list of benefits for welfare schemes and completed works will be ready in a few days,” said a revenue official.
Among them, the Chief Minister will inaugurate a ₹ 12.17 crore two-storey permanent building for public grievances meetings and special camps within Collectorate premises in the town.
The new facility is the first such building that is meant only to address public grievances and conduct special camps like patta name change and other works. Spread over 13,000 sq.ft, the public grievances building has a spacious auditorium and large meeting halls that can accommodate at least 700 persons in each hall.
Corporation officials said that Mr. Stalin will inaugurate a ₹ 30.15 crore new modern bus terminus on the Chennai – Tindivanam Road during his visit to the town on December 26. The new facility will replace the existing dilapidated terminus that was opened in 1988. Spread over 6.6 acres, the new terminus will have at least 70 bus bays, commuters’ waiting hall, and parking lots.
As part of providing permanent infrastructure for farmers, Mr. Stalin will also open ₹ 24.50 crore first combined wholesale and retail market for vegetables, fruits and flowers in the town. It will replace the existing method in which perishables were handled at temporary outlets in the town.
