All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 marked a “weakening” of the Constitution and the rule of law.
Addressing a gathering at party headquarters in Darussalaam, Mr Owaisi said leaders including L K Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti had given written undertakings, in the presence of the police, that the mosque would be untouched. “Despite this, it was demolished in the presence of police,” he said.
Touching upon the events of December 22 and 23, 1949, he said miscreants had entered the mosque and placed idols there. He said that the demolition per the Supreme Court itself was an “egregious” and a violation of the rule of law.
Mr Owaisi said thousands had gathered at the site on the day of the demolition but the criminal cases that followed ended in acquittals. He said that the BJP government did not appeal against the trial court verdict.
Mr Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha, said that the Supreme Court in its judgment had recorded that no temple was demolished for the construction of the mosque. “On December 6, the Constitution was weakened and the rule of law was wounded,” he said.
