It is important for doctors to have a sense of service and humanitarian values for doing justice to their jobs, Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav has said.

Participating in a chat with doctors of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Vijayawada on Thursday, the Minister, while referring to the recent PHC doctors’ strike, said while there was nothing wrong in fighting for rights, it was also important for a medical professional to introspect if they were doing justice to their jobs.

He cautioned the PHC doctors that their negligence should never harm a patient’s life. He added that while doctors do not get recognition immediately for good work, but one mistake can ruin their reputation.

He called on PHC doctors to ensure that cancer screening, being taken up under the Non-Communicable Diseases-4 programme, is done effectively.

Regarding their strike demands, the Health Minister said the government is positive about providing admissions to PHC doctors through in-service quota in Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses.

The Minister said he had instructed officials to study the issues related to seat allotment, time-bound promotions, notional increments and allowances for PHC doctors working in tribal areas.

During the interaction, PHC doctors brought to the Minister’s notice the need for deployment of officers for inspections, bringing in safety measures for doctors working on night shifts and appointment of watchmen at PHCs.

Health and Family Welfare Commissioner G. Veerapandian and Director of Public Health K. Padmavathi were present in the programme.
