The Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) manifesto for Thiruvananthapuram for the upcoming local body elections makes a host of promises under the broad tagline of ‘Capital City, Happiness City.’ A vision document will be prepared outlining the developmental plans for the city till 2050, based on the master plan which was approved by the State government.

The LDF manifesto released on Tuesday promises a ‘professional makeover’ in the running of the Corporation, with the necessary training for the employees. A ‘Talk with Mayor’ system will be implemented for the public to directly raise various issues with the Mayor. The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will be more effectively used for monitoring of traffic, streetlights, air quality and flood warning.

Regarding waste management, the manifesto lays stress on waste treatment at source for households, while a centralised treatment plant using Biomethanation will be set up to treat bio waste from bulk waste generators. In addition, a sanitary waste treatment plant also will be set up. Modern machinery will be employed for road cleaning. A recycling centre for non-biodegradable waste will be set up. More public restrooms will be constructed.

An action plan will be prepared for the development of the IT-allied sector, which is set for further expansion with the completion of the Technopark fourth phase. Public transport linking all the four phases of the Technopark will be significantly improved. Proposals to tap the possibilities as a port city are part of the manifesto.

The women’s help centre currently functioning at the Corporation will be turned into a round-the-clock mechanism with legal help, counselling and other services. Training in tackling competitive examinations will be provided to homemakers. ‘She’ lodges will be constructed in more locations in the city for the benefit of women who visit the city for various purposes.

A new 100 MLD water treatment plants will be established at Aruvikkara. Drinking water pipe line in the city will be expanded by 400 kilometres. Ponds, canals and other water sources will be cleaned and revived. More sporting facilities including turfs, open gyms and swimming pools will be constructed. A playground and an open gym will be ensured in each ward and a stadium will be built for ten wards. Priority will be given in sports training to children from coastal regions and women.

The manifesto makes a slew of promises to senior citizens, including senior citizen-friendly footpaths, formation of a senior citizens’ fund for welfare measures, paid old age homes, sports meets for the elderly, awareness campaigns against ageism, get-togethers of elderly in every ward and a senior skill bank to make use of the expertise of senior citizens for various activities. Rest centres will be built for food delivery workers as well auto and taxi drivers.

An annual ‘Manaveeyam’ festival will be organised in the city’s cultural corridor. Food streets, book streets and more locations of night life activity similar to Manaveeyam Veedhi are part of the promises.
