Waste management, canal rejuvenation get priority in LDF’s manifesto for Kochi Corporation

The manifesto of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) for the Kochi Corporation, released here on Tuesday (December 2), accords priority to projects aimed at improving the waste management scenario and rejuvenation of canals to check the long-standing issue of waterlogging.

A windrow compost unit with a capacity to process 50 tonnes of waste a day, a waste-to-energy plant, and proper management of decentralised waste management models figure top among the promises.

Mayor M. Anilkumar said a permanent mechanism would be in place to address waste management issues along coastal regions. The rejuvenation of Perandoor, Chilavannoor, Edappally, Konthuruthy, Thevara, and Market canals will be completed. The rejuvenation of Rameswaram-Mambra canal, Edakochi-Pashnithodu, and Pandarachirathodu will also be undertaken to resolve mosquito menace and waterlogging issues, he added.

The manifesto promises to intensify mosquito eradication projects by joining hands with the Vector Control Research Centre in Puducherry. The assurances made for infrastructure development include completion of the development of the Thammanam-Pullepady road, Goshree-Mamangalam road, and Kaloor-Perandoor road, among others. A convention centre at the zonal office of the Corporation at Anchumana, a stadium at Edakochi, and the renovation of the private bus stand at Kaloor figure among the infrastructure initiatives.

The manifesto promises a multi-level parking system, feeding rooms with modern facilities, permanent exhibition centres near the Marine Drive helipad, appointment of professionals to ensure that citizens receive various services without delay, and monthly adalats to resolve complaints.

The document includes the 190-MLD (million litres per day) drinking water project and a system to resolve issues in the water distribution network without delay. In the health sector, the manifesto has included a special project for cancer care and the modernisation of the Government Taluk Hospital at Karuvelipady.

Fair price shops, ‘Janakeeya hotels’ modelled on the Samridhi budget hotel project, grading for hotels on the basis of sanitation and quality of food, and a comprehensive project for the elderly, also figure among the promises in the manifesto.
