A habitual house burglar, involved in nearly 150 house burglary cases across Hyderabad, was arrested by the Bandlaguda police on Monday in connection with a recent break-in in the city. Gold and silver ornaments worth approximately ₹10 lakh were recovered from him.

The accused was identified as Mohammed Saleem, also known as Sunil Shetty, Ibrahim or Setty Saleem, a 52-year-old resident of Ali Nagar, Balapur.

The arrest was made while investigating a complaint lodged on September 6 by Shawanaz Mirza of Quba Colony, who reported the theft of gold ornaments and cash from her residence.

During ongoing efforts to trace the culprit, police on December 1 apprehended Saleem. He was detained on suspicion due to his extensive criminal history, having been involved in nearly 150 house burglary cases. A suspect sheet has long been maintained against him at Kanchanbagh police station.

Saleem was previously detained under the Preventive Detention Act in 2018 and 2021 and was last sent to judicial custody in April this year before being released in August. Police said he returned to committing offences soon after his release.

During interrogation, he confessed to three burglaries in Bandlaguda, and another in Balapur. His disclosures led to the recovery of 10 tolas of gold and silver ornaments each from his possession.

Further investigation is under way.
