A comprehensive development proposal for Udupi district submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Krishna Mutt on Friday (November 28, 2025) has sought metro rail connectivity between Udupi and Mangaluru, national recognition to Kambala, establishment of IIT and IIM among eight proposals.

Senior pontiff of Paryaya Putthige Mutt Sugunendra Tirtha and the junior pontiff Sushrendra Tirtha submitted the memorandum with the proposals to Mr. Modi “on behalf of devotees and citizens of Udupi district.”

The memorandum said that the 55 km coastal stretch between Mangaluru and Udupi experiences high daily commuter traffic and congestion. Udupi district administration is ready to prepare an initial project report for a Mass Rapid Transit/Metro corridor between Udupi and Mangaluru.

It appealed to the Prime Minister to including Mangaluru–Udupi Metro Corridor proposal under national urban mobility programmes to ensure safe, green, and time-efficient regional connectivity.

Recognition for Kambala

Seeking national recognition for Kambala, the memorandum said that the recognition will help preserve and promote indigenous culture, increase footfall of tourists and bring national-level recognition to Kambala jockeys.

The Karnataka government officially recognised Kambala recently by bringing it under the Sports Authority of Karnataka.

Airport and AIIMS

Seeking an international airport in Udupi district, the proposal noted that 1,000 acres of land is available and is ideally suited for airport development. “The terrain is flat and free of major obstacles, enabling safe runway construction suitable for large international aircraft,” it said.

In addition to IIT and IIM, the memorandum also sought AIIMS to Udupi. If set up, the medical institute would support tertiary healthcare for both Karnataka and North Kerala. It is vital for oncology, cardiology, trauma care, and super speciality services and will elevate regional medical research and training, the memorandum said.

IT and AI park

It also sought the establishment of an IT and AI Innovation Park with incubation support under Digital India programme. The memorandum sought support for data security and cloud computing infrastructure to strengthen India’s technological independence. An IT Park would create employment and encourage entrepreneurs, the memorandum said.

The memorandum also sought an international standard Port and Cruise Terminal in Udupi. It would boost maritime trade and exports, cruise tourism and help for the long term development of blue economy.
