Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is expected to train his focus on the functioning of university-run hostels in the State.
In an official communication from the Raj Bhavan, Vice-Chancellors have been formally intimated that the Governor will address concerns related to “the growing incidents of student unrest in the university hostels”. The issue will be taken up during his interaction with 14 Vice-Chancellors at a programme scheduled at Calicut University on December 2.
During his visit, Mr. Arlekar will release a book on former Finance Minister John Matthai, launch six Massive Open Online Courses, and interact with the Director of the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre. The meeting with the Vice-Chancellors will follow the event and will include discussions on implementing “strict measures to contain” student unrest on campuses.
Notably, the Vice-Chancellors have also been asked to present their views on the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry headed by former Kerala High Court judge A. Hariprasad. The commission was constituted after the death of veterinary student Sidharthan J.S. at the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU).
The commission had identified lapses on the part of the KVASU Vice-Chancellor in maintaining campus discipline and preventing ragging, which is suspected to have contributed to the student’s alleged suicide.
Universities have also been directed to submit copies of the allotment rules currently in force at their respective hostels.
