Family dramas are making a resurgence on Tamil television and channels are turning to emotionally-rooted, multi-generational storylines to capture serial audiences.

In line with this trend, Zee Tamil recently unveiled its new fiction show, ‘Annamalai Kudumbam.’ Centered on a woman who builds a successful saree business and dedicates life to empowering women weavers through ‘Annamalai Silks,’, the show received a befitting grand launch marked by the reveal of a 230-feet-long saree that brought its theme to life.

About the show that premiered on November 24, 2025 Zee Tamil’s Chief Channel Officer V.S. Raghavan said the channel is gearing up to provide engaging and fast-paced shows during the afternoon slots, tailored to the diverse tastes of audience. It has consistently delivered compelling narratives rooted in Tamil Nadu’s culture, resonating with audience.

Building on the success of various fiction shows ‘Idhayam’ and ‘Varisu’, the channel’s latest launch delves into the complex tapestry of relationships within a joint family.

Annamalai Kudumbam follows the story of ‘Annamalai’ (played by actor Roopa) a strong-willed woman who builds a flourishing silk-saree business through years of her hard work and unwavering family support. Her aspiration is to see her family remain united.

The narrative shifts when two sisters with contrasting personalities enter the household as daughters-in-law — Vennila (Yuktha), who values harmony, and Vanmathi, who is self-focused. Their arrival tests the strength of the family’s bond and raises the question of whether the unity Annamalai cherishes can withstand emerging tensions.

The show, which explores how love and individuality and changing values challenge age-old familial norms, airs from Monday to Saturday at 2.30 p.m.

Riding high on anime

With anime gaining strong traction among young viewers, broadcasters are ramping up their programming strategies to bring more global titles to regional audiences – and Tamil has emerged as one of the key focus languages.

Sony YAY! has been instrumental in bringing anime to Indian television, particularly for Tamil-speaking audiences. The channel has premiered globally celebrated anime titles dubbed in Tamil, alongside Hindi and Telugu.

A major highlight was the Indian television premiere of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 this month — a move that signalled Sony YAY!’s intent to deliver emotionally rich, action-packed anime to regional viewers.

Its growing anime catalogue also features acclaimed titles Radiant, Metallic Rouge, and The God of High School. Long-time fan favourites like Naruto Shippuden and One Punch Man made their Tamil-dubbed debut on the channel with a premiere on November 22, 2025.

To make anime more accessible, the channel launched ANiMAZiNG, a three-hour anime block airing daily from 9 p.m. to midnight, offering Tamil, Telugu and Hindi viewers a consistent prime-time window to engage with premium content.

Ambesh Tiwari, Business Head, Sony YAY!, said beyond anime, the channel continues to build the kids’ entertainment portfolio with a mix of Indian originals and international favourites tailored for different age groups.

Along with regional-language versions of its Indian originals such as Kicko and Super Speedo and Honey Bunny Ka Jholmaal, it also brings popular international favourites to Tamil audience. This includes new episodes of the much-loved Shinchan, now dubbed in Tamil and available on broadcast and digital platforms, he said.

This year, the channel expanded its content with CID Squad, an animated investigative thriller, reinforcing its strategy to develop fresh stories for children in regional languages.

Sony YAY!’s Tamil strategy is to make anime and animated content accessible and compelling. By pairing globally popular dubbed anime with locally produced animated series, the channel is strengthening its position in the Indian kids’ television space and helping fuel the rise of anime culture in regional markets, Mr. Tiwari added.
