Two constables attached to the J.P. Nagar police station have been arrested for allegedly robbing a 59-year-old insurance adviser and his female friend. Both have now been suspended, taking the total number of suspended police personnel in the city this year to 127, officials said. This comes close on the heels of a police constable being arrested for his involved in the ATM cash van robbery case.

The duo identified as Basavaraj and Gurudutt, who were on night rounds, confronted Varadaraju B.N., while he was parking his car near BSNL compound area in J.P. Nagar and chatting with his female friend around 9.45 p.m. on November 1.

According to the complainant, his friend had come to seek insurance advice while he was returning home from work. The duo met and were sitting in the parked car and discussing, when the constables confronted them on the pretext of inquiry. The duo said that there was a case pending against him and one of them got into the car asking him to come to the station for arrest formality.

While Varadaraju started driving, the constable asked him to stop and demanded ₹40,000 to drop the charges. He threatened to seize the car and book the duo if they failed to pay.

Varadaraju convinced him that he did not have enough cash and managed to pay him only ₹10,300 after borrowing ₹4,000 from is female friend.

After taking the money the duo left. Varadaraju brought this to the notice of his friend, a senior police officer who advised him to file a complaint. After four days of the incident, the victim filed a complaint based on which the J.P. Nagar police registered a case of extortion and initiated a probe.

A detailed probe led to the arrest of Basavaraj and Gurudutt who were released on bail later. Based on the report, Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh suspended the duo pending inquiry.
