Activists of All India Mahila Sanskritika Sanghatane (AIMSS) launched a month-long signature campaign in the city on Tuesday to draw attention of the State government to the increase in atrocities against women and children in society.

The campaign is part of a State-wide exercise, and the AIMSS expressed concern over failure of the government to arrest the growing crime against women and children.

Citing statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau, the AIMSS said that between 2023 and 2025 there were 16,272 cases of sexual harassment registered in Karnataka, 5,456 dowry cases, 10,510 POCSO cases, 412 child marriages among others.

It said as many as 900 cases of female foeticide were reported in two years in Bengaluru and Mysuru alone, all of which point to collapse of law and order. Between 2019 and 2021, there were 40,000 cases of missing girls, and these were only the registered cases, it said.

The AIMSS also lashed out on the social media for reflecting vulgarities and ‘commodification’ of women and girls. The reels on social media were having a negative influence on the new generation and values were on a decline, the AIMSS added.

The month-long signature campaign will also include seminars, workshops, group discussions on relevant issues with the student community, cultural programmes, screening documentaries and films that promote values and ethics, according to the AIMSS.

It has urged the government to ensure security for women and children in public places, offices and place of work, fast-track cases of molestation and rape and ensure stringent punishment to the convicts, crack down on pornography and sleazy content on social media, curb human trafficking, and take steps to ensure education to all girls.
