The Wilson Garden Police have arrested three men for allegedly robbing a 54-year-old man at knifepoint.

The accused have been identified as Vikram, 19, Saravana, 20, and Surya, 19. They were daily wage labourers and play musical instruments at weddings and funerals.

The incident took place near the Ayyappa Temple in Shantinagar in the early hours of November 15. The victim, a car wash attendant, was returning home from work on his two-wheeler when the trio waylaid him. They robbed him of his mobile phone and a silver chain at knifepoint and fled the spot.

A suo moto investigation was launched by inspector Farooq Pasha M.G., as the victim was initially scared to lodge a complaint. The police analysed footage from more than 300 CCTV cameras along the escape route before zeroing in on the suspects at the L.R. Nagar slum quarters in Adugodi on Saturday.

The police traced down the fleeing men using clues such as a distinctive white bandana worn by one of the accused and a reflective sticker on the jacket of another.

The police said all three were drug addicts, and Saravana already had a robbery case registered against him in Adugodi. After the trio reportedly confessed to the crime and the stolen valuables were recovered, the police convinced the victim to file a formal complaint.

The accused were booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act, and remanded in judicial custody.
