Man arrested for selling painkiller tablets as drugs to students

The High Grounds police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly selling painkiller tablets as psychotropic drugs to students in the central business district.

Based on a tip-off, a team of police personnel caught the accused Prem Vaishnav, a native of Rajasthan and a resident of Binny mills, red-handed while selling painkillers to his customers for a price ranging from ₹200 to ₹500 a tablet.

The police recovered 6,700 such tablets and booked him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

According to the police, Prem used to sell paint and other accessories for a living and indulged in selling tablets as a side job.

Probe revealed that he had sourced such a huge amount of tablets from a neighbouring State through a parcel service. The drug was not sold over the counter but with a prescription, a police officer said, adding that the report in this regard has been submitted to the Drug Control Department for further action.

There are more people involved in the racket, and efforts are on to track them, the police said.
