Poet and Sahitya Akademi award-winner Erode Tamilanban died on Saturday (November 22, 2025). He was 92.

Born N. Jagadeesan in Chennimalai in Erode district, Tamilanban was part of the Vanambadi poetry movement launched in the 1970s, which is regarded as an extension of a long tradition of Tamil poetry and is credited with ushering in a renaissance in Tamil literary expression.

A Tamil teacher at New College, Chennai, he was also a newsreader with Doordarshan, and was known for his flawless pronunciation and intonation.

He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2004 for Vanakkam Valluva, a collection of poems based on the Tirukkural. Tamilanban had said in a media interview that the poems were intended to seek clarifications from Tiruvalluvar himself.
