Addressing fisherman on the occasion of World Fisheries Day, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said unlike the Prime Minister, he always met representatives of fishermen associations whenever he visited the State’s coastal districts. He was virtually addressing the event organised on Friday by the Coastal Peace and Development and Kanniyakumari District Fishermen Sangams’ Association in Colachel in Kanniyakumari district.

Mr. Stalin said: “I have always been one among you and have come looking for you at your home. You can visit me at the Secretariat anytime you want. This Dravidian model of governance is that close to fishermen.” He said he had always listened to their representations and was fulfilling them. “This relationship should always continue,” he said.

He said: “The Union government must initiate strong steps to avoid the challenges and loss of lives suffered by the fishermen of Tamil Nadu in the hands of the Sri Lankan Navy. Children of fishermen should pursue studies and go on to occupy coveted positions.” He also called upon fishermen to avail themselves of the loan assistance provided by the government and excel in value added products related to fisheries.

“I also intend to implement more programmes for your betterment when the Dravidian Model 2.0 government is formed next year,” he added and listed various initiatives and programmes that his government is currently implementing for fishermen welfare.
