The police, on Tuesday, arrested a man for raping a minor girl, who is his wife’s younger sister, and making her pregnant.

The incident is said to have happened in July but came to light recently when the minor girl was brought to a government hospital after she complained of stomach pain.

The doctor, after necessary medical examinations, declared the minor’s pregnancy.

When her parents enquired, the minor girl explained the sexual harassment by her sister’s husband, following which the parents lodged a complaint against their son-in-law.

According to the FIR, the incident happened in July when the minor was at her sister’s house to help her after she gave birth to a baby.

The FIR, quoting the complaint as saying, stated that the accused gave a life threat to the minor girl after raping her.

Superintendent of Police Pruthvik Shankar told The Hindu that after registering a case under Sections 65(1) and 351(2) of BNS 2023 and Sections 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act 2012, the police arrested the accused and initiated further procedure.

This is the second incident where a minor has been subjected to sexual harassment within a period of three months.

In August, a minor girl delivered a baby in a government-run school.

The number of incidents where minor girls have been subjected to sexual abuse in the district is 98 this year.

“Out of the 98 cases, investigation in 75 cases has already been completed and chargesheet have been submitted before jurisdictional courts. There are very few cases that are under investigation,” Mr. Shankar said.

“Strict instructions have been given to officers of the department concerned to take initiatives to ensure the safety of minor victims,” said president of the Karnataka State Commission for Children Rights Protection Shashidhar Kosambe.

He said that officers have also been asked to submit a detailed report.
